NFL: Green Bay Packers – Fans increasingly dissatisfied with head coach Matt LaFleur after defeat to Carolina Panthers

A game-winning field goal saw the Carolina Panthers prevail 16-13 over the Green Bay Packers. Many Packers fans are blaming head coach Matt LaFleur for the defeat.

After eight games, the Green Bay Packers have five wins, two losses, and one tie. They lead the NFC North and, according to the official NFL website, have an 83 percent chance of making the playoffs.

So everything should be fine, right?

Wrong. The season started with two convincing wins – first against division rivals the Detroit Lions and then with a strong performance against the Washington Commanders. After that, however, fan dissatisfaction grew significantly. A loss to the Cleveland Browns, in which both the defense and offense completely collapsed in the final quarter, raised the first doubts.

Week four saw a shootout (40-40) against the Dallas Cowboys, in which the offense was convincing, but the defense was virtually non-existent.

This was followed by a hard-fought victory against the injury-plagued Cincinnati Bengals, which was only decided in the final quarter, and another narrow win against the Arizona Cardinals without Kyler Murray. In the penultimate week, there was a somewhat more convincing victory against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but after the embarrassing defeat against the Carolina Panthers, that is also long forgotten.

Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur under fire

Packers fans have found their culprit. On social media, the blame for the poor performances is being directed primarily at head coach Matt LaFleur.

He is primarily accused of choosing the wrong play calling at crucial moments. Yet the team actually has star power: With Jordan Love as quarterback and Josh Jacobs as running back on offense, and Micah Parsons and Xavier McKinney on defense, it seems that LaFleur is not bringing his team’s potential to the field.

LaFleur is now in his seventh season as head coach of the Packers.

Over the past six seasons, he led Green Bay to the playoffs five times and reached the NFC Championship Game twice, but lost once to the San Francisco 49ers and once to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the other playoff appearances, the Packers were eliminated even earlier.
