For George Kittle, no player other than 49ers teammate Nick Bosa is eligible for the Defensive Player of the Year award. Bosa is “an absolute monster,” said the tight end, who could even envision Bosa as the MVP of the season.
Two game days are left in the NFL regular season, but the race for a title is already over for George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers.
That’s because none other than teammate Nick Bosa is up for Defensive Player of the Year for the tight end.
“I think today he secured the Defensive MVP title,” Kittle told “ESPN” after San Francisco’s 37-20 win over the Washington Commanders in Week 16.
Two sacks, four quarterback hits and a forced fumble were on Bosa’s work record. “I just don’t know who it could be besides him,” Kittle said, referring to the defensive MVP’s numbers and title.
San Francisco 49ers: Nick Bosa having strong season
Kittle’s praise isn’t limited to the game against the Commanders, though. Bosa is putting up MVP-worthy numbers overall this season.
The second pick of the 2019 draft has collected 17.5 total sacks, 42 quarterback hits and 18 tackles for loss in 14 games in 2022. That’s in addition to two forced fumbles and one pass defended.
The only time Bosa had not been on the field this season was in Week 6 (a 14-28 loss to the Atlanta Falcons).
San Francisco 49ers: Georg Kittle with high praise for Bosa
“When you look at how he plays every Sunday, compared to every other player in the league – whether it’s on offense or defense – I don’t know why his name doesn’t come up in the MVP discussion,” Kittle had high praise for his teammate.
Bosa was “an absolute monster” every day, the tight end judged. All of his sacks were hard-earned and deserved, the 29-year-old said of the defensive end’s work ethic.
Whether it will actually be enough for Bosa to win the title of “Defensive Player of the Year” at the end of the regular season remains to be seen. Linebacker Micah Parsons of the Dallas Cowboys is considered by many experts to be the favourite for the award.
Nick Bosa: Playoffs secured, 49ers franchise record beckons
Meanwhile, Bosa is very close to another personal award: If he collects two more sacks in the next few games, he would have set 49ers franchise legend Aldon Smith’s franchise record. It’s a milestone the 25-year-old is definitely looking at.
“It feels like I’m living my dream right now,” Bosa said, referring to his accomplishments for the 49ers this season.
Bosa is already assured of a playoff berth with the San Francisco 49ers. In Week 15, they had secured the NFC West division title with a win over the Seattle Seahawks, which entitles them to participate in the knockout phase.
