With the start of free agency, the 2025 NFL season is finally on the horizon. We will keep you updated on all important personnel developments here in the ticker.
The start of free agency is the day when the old NFL season finally ends and the focus turns to the new season.
April 7, 9:09 p.m.: NFL instead of basketball – Panthers sign 2.06-meter giant Granger as tight end
The Carolina Panthers confirmed the signing of Colin Granger as their new tight end on Monday.
The curious thing about this is that the 2.06-meter giant has no experience of playing football, having previously played college basketball for Western Carolina and Coastal Carolina.
Accordingly, many Panthers fans reacted with skepticism or amusement to Granger’s signing.

6 April, 5:10 p.m.: Raiders apparently want to release Jack Jones
The rebuilding process under head coach Pete Carroll is apparently supposed to take place without Jack Jones at the Las Vegas Raiders. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the franchise is trying to trade the cornerback. If no taker can be found, the 27-year-old will be released.
Jones, a 2022 fourth-round pick by the New England Patriots, was signed by the Raiders in November 2023 as a waiver after being released in Foxborough. So far, he has 136 tackles, a forced fumble and seven interceptions for four touchdowns. In 2024, he appeared in all 17 regular season games.
April 5, 11:59 a.m.: Trey Lance signs with the Los Angeles Chargers
After recent rumours of an engagement in the CFL, Trey Lance will now stay in the NFL after all.
The former 2021 number three pick is signing a one-year contract with the Los Angeles Chargers and will be Justin Herbert’s new backup.
The contract can earn Lance up to $6.2 million in 2025 – but in return, he will have to be on the pitch. The young quarterback’s base salary is unknown for the time being.
When does the NFL free agency period begin in 2025?
In 2025, free agency begins on March 10, from which day outfield players may negotiate freely with other teams. The new league year officially starts on March 12, and only then may the agreements be signed.
