The Washington Commanders have the second pick in the draft. Will they get a quarterback? Or even a trade?
Whoever has had a particularly bad season is often particularly popular in April. Because that’s when the draft is coming up.
And bad teams are usually particularly well equipped to draft talent – with a top pick. And others would like to have that too. Which in turn leads to trade requests.
As is currently the case with the Washington Commanders. Those responsible are taking a relaxed approach to the whole thing. It is expected that the team of new head coach Dan Quinn will select a quarterback in second place, specifically Jayden Daniels (LSU). But the phone is already ringing and the Commanders are picking up.
“A lot of times it’s along the lines of, ‘No, but thanks for calling.’ But it’s part of the process, and you have to do your due diligence to listen and find out if there’s something you just can’t turn down,” Quinn said.
The new head coach is reminiscent of a trade the Dallas Cowboys made in 1989, when running back Herschel Walker went to the Minnesota Vikings for five players and ended up with eight picks. The Cowboys thus laid the foundation for the successful 90s with three Super Bowl victories.
“I think anybody in personnel that has the skill set of Adam (Peters, GM, notes) will listen, but there’s only so many things you can consider and it better be really good,” Quinn said.
