Teams like to trade up in the NFL Draft. One candidate for 2024 is the Minnesota Vikings. But what would the team have to put on the table?
The Minnesota Vikings are playing a bit of draft chess. Most recently, the franchise traded for a first-round pick from the Houston Texans in the upcoming draft. That gives them their own pick at number eleven and the Texans’ at number 23.
More than a few experts believe the Vikings are positioning themselves to trade up armed with those two picks to get one of the quarterbacks from the highly talented class of 2024. Finally, despite the signing of Sam Darnold, the search is on for a successor to Kirk Cousins, who went to the Atlanta Falcons. Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, Drake Maye and J.J. McCarthy are considered top options.
But what exactly would the Vikings have to put down to get one of the top picks?
“CBS Sports” measures this using the so-called “Draft Pick Value Chart” by R.J. White, in which the picks are evaluated on the basis of points. If a team wants to make a trade up, it usually has to outbid the listed value of a pick for a trade to materialize.
Where do the Vikings strike?
Example No. 2 pick of the Washington Commanders, who want a quarterback themselves: New head coach Dan Quinn has emphasized that they are listening to offers, but they would have to be pretty good. The pick is valued at 777.06 points.
According to “CBS”, the Commanders could become weak with a total of four first-round picks (numbers 11 and 23 for 2024 as well as first-round picks for 2025 and 2026). That would be a total of 898.96 points.
This variant would therefore also be possible: picks number 11, 23 and 108 for 2024, plus a first-round pick in 2025 and a second-round pick in 2026 (828.85 points).
Logical with the trade value chart: the lower it goes, the cheaper it gets. The number 3 pick of the New England Patriots “costs” 671.76 points together with the 137th pick, although the Patriots actually want a new quarterback themselves.
A possible deal: The Vikings receive No. 3 and a fourth-round pick for 2025 (674.35 points), and in return the Patriots receive No. 11 and 23 for 2024 as well as a first-round pick and third-round pick for 2025 (763.23 points).
It’s getting “cheaper “
Concrete speculation is that the Vikings could go for pick number four, which belongs to the Arizona Cardinals and is worth 577.65 points. To match that value, the Cardinals would get picks number 11, 23, 129 and 230 (577.72 points) for 2024.
Pick number five of the Los Angeles Chargers (520.41 points) could be snapped up by the Vikings with picks number 11 and 23 (560.1 points). The draft will take place from April 25-27 in Detroit
