NFL: Donald Trump apparently has a bizarre request for the Washington Commanders’ stadium

The Washington Commanders will get a new stadium in the next few years. US President Donald Trump apparently has a clear idea about the name.

The Washington Commanders will get a new NFL stadium in the coming years, with the Washington, D.C. City Council giving the project the final green light in September.

The new 65,000-seat arena is scheduled to be completed by 2030 at a total cost of $3.7 billion, most of which will be covered by the Commanders. The site of the old Robert F. Kennedy Stadium, home of the Redskins from 1961 to 1996, was chosen as the location.

The name of the new arena has not yet been decided, but at least one person clearly has a clear idea. According to ESPN, US President Donald Trump has modestly requested that the stadium be named after him.

Will the new Commanders stadium be named after Donald Trump?

The media outlet reports, citing a source in the White House, that talks are already underway with a member of the Commanders’ ownership group. ESPN quotes the source as saying, “The president wants it, and it will probably happen.”

Meanwhile, government spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said, “It would be a wonderful name, because it was President Trump who made the construction of the new stadium possible.” However, she remained silent when asked further questions.
In line with the reports, Trump will be present on Sunday as the guest of honor of Josh Harris, who heads the Commanders’ ownership group, at the home game against the Detroit Lions.

Dispute between the Commanders and Trump

There has been repeated discord between the US president and the NFL team from the capital in the past. The reason for this is the franchise’s new name; Trump had vehemently advocated for the Commanders to return to their traditional name, “Redskins.”

However, the decision on what name the new stadium will bear is not solely up to the Commanders. The city and the National Park Service, which manages the site of the new stadium, also have a say. “The team doesn’t have the authority. They can’t name the stadium themselves,” ESPN quotes a source as saying.

The new arena will replace the current Northwest Stadium, which is located outside the city limits of Washington, D.C., in Landover, Maryland. Long known as FedEx Stadium, the stadium was only opened in 1997, but is considered by fans to be the most unpopular stadium in the entire NFL.
