NFL: Detroit Lions mourn the loss of legend Joe Schmidt

Joe Schmidt, one of the best and most successful NFL players in the history of the Detroit Lions, dies

Joe Schmidt, one of the best players in the history of the Detroit Lions, has died at the age of 92.

The Michigan franchise made the announcement on Thursday. The statement reads: “We are saddened by the news of Joe Schmidt’s passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife Marilyn and the entire Schmidt family.”

Schmidt was one of the first Lions players to achieve great popularity. During his 13-year career, the linebacker played exclusively for the Lions.

From 1954 to 1963, he was nominated for the Pro Bowl ten years in a row. He was consistently one of the best at his position during this time.

He won the NFL title twice with the Lions in the 1950s, which was not played in a Super Bowl at the time, and has been part of the Hall of Fame since 1973.
