The Detroit Lions win their first game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams, but the decision is made in overtime

Los Angeles Rams @ Detroit Lions 20:26 OT

The Detroit Lions have started the new NFL season with a narrow victory. The team from the NFC North beat the Los Angeles Rams 26:20 in the Sunday Night Game on the first matchday, but the game was only decided in overtime.

After a rather uneventful first quarter, kicker Jake Bates with a field goal and Jahmyr Gibbs with a one-yard rushing touchdown gave the Lions a 10:3 lead at the break.

The highlight of the game came after the break. Detroit quarterback Jared Goff threw a 52-yard touchdown pass to Jameson Williams. However, the Lions were unable to maintain their supposedly comfortable 17:3 lead.

Instead, the Rams managed to get on the scoreboard three times in a row. Kyren Williams (two-yard run), Cooper Kupp (9-yard touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford) and kicker Joshua Karty via field goal scored points

A 17:3 lead turned into a 17:20 deficit, which the Lions equalized with a field goal 17 seconds before the end of the game. They then benefited from luck with a coin toss in overtime. The hosts got the ball first and ended their drive with a one-yard rushing touchdown by David Montgomery.

Amon-Ra St. Brown barely makes an appearance

Jared Goff completed 18 of 28 passes for a touchdown in the first home win of the season, but he also threw an interception.

His counterpart Stafford completed 34 of 49 passes for 317 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Meanwhile, German star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown only played a subordinate role in the game. He was thrown at five times by his quarterback and ended up with three catches for 13 yards.

Meanwhile, it was a bitter pill for the Rams: right in the first half, pass receiver Puka Nacua had to leave the field with knee problems and did not return. Rams left tackle Joe Noteboom even had to be carted off the field with an ankle injury
