The Dallas Cowboys have released cornerback Trevon Diggs despite his $97 million contract. The two-time Pro Bowler has been plagued by injuries recently and could now move to a new team via waivers.
The Dallas Cowboys have surprisingly released cornerback Trevon Diggs just days before the final game of the season. The 27-year-old is now going through the waiver process and would be available if no team secures his contract.
On Sunday, the Cowboys will play their season finale at the New York Giants – but without their former star defensive back.
The decision marks the end of a difficult period between the franchise and the player. According to media reports, the decision was based on long-simmering dissatisfaction – both on the field and in their relationship with each other.
Diggs had only signed a five-year contract extension in 2023, which was to earn him a total of $97 million. But injuries repeatedly set him back: in the past two years, the cornerback only made 21 appearances.
Trevon Diggs: Series of injuries, slump in performance – now free via waiver
A cruciate ligament rupture in 2023 was followed by further knee problems and a concussion, which he said he sustained in an accident at home.
Diggs’ athletic performance fell short of his previous achievements: in eight games this season, he recorded 27 tackles but no interceptions or pass breakups – a stark contrast to his stellar 2021 season, in which he caught 11 interceptions and was selected for the All-Pro team.
For teams now looking to sign Diggs off waivers, there would be little financial risk involved for the time being. According to US reports, salary portions for Week 18 and a possible active roster bonus would have to be assumed, but there are no longer any long-term guarantees.
A final separation after the end of the season was considered likely anyway, as it would have saved the Cowboys around $12 million in cap space and no more guaranteed payments would have been due.
Dallas is now increasingly relying on younger alternatives in the defensive backfield and recently had to place former Pro Bowler DaRon Bland on the injured reserve list due to injury.
Brother Stefon Diggs in court on the same day for assault
While Trevon Diggs faces an uncertain future in sports, his brother Stefon Diggs is also making headlines.
The New England Patriots wide receiver is under investigation for aggravated assault, which he vehemently denies.
