D.K. Metcalf requests a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. Which NFL teams are potential landing spots for the wide receiver?
With just days to go before the start of NFL free agency, D.K. Metcalf, a high-profile wide receiver, is coming onto the market.
The 27-year-old wide receiver has asked the Seattle Seahawks for a trade before the final year of his contract. Metcalf was drafted by Seattle in the second round (64th pick) in 2019, and now he wants out of the Pacific Northwest – and presumably to a playoff or Super Bowl contender.
According to reports in The Athletic, the Seahawks are asking for a first-round pick for Metcalf in a potential trade. It was previously reported that at least a second-round pick should be part of the deal.
The big question, however, after it became clear whether the Seahawks would trade their number one receiver at all, is where he will next play.
DK Metcalf Landing Spots: Los Angeles Chargers
Many US media outlets are already linking Metcalf to the Los Angeles Chargers. The wide receiver could be a missing piece in head coach Jim Harbaugh’s offense.
Although quarterback Justin Herbert already has a top target in last year’s rookie Ladd McConkey, a duo with Metcalf would take the Chargers’ passing game to a new level.
McConkey is arguably a slot receiver, but Metcalf regularly seeks the depth of the field. With Herbert’s strong arm, this could be a good fit.
Metcalf to the New England Patriots?
There is a lot of work to be done in New England. New head coach Mike Vrabel has the chance to build something with a lot of cap space.
There is no question that the Patriots will at least inquire about Metcalf – but would that be a good match? Most likely, because Metcalf would be the first target of playmaker Drake Maye, on whom all hopes are pinned in Boston.
In recent years, the Patriots playmakers lacked a classic go-to guy. That could be Metcalf. But the receiver himself has the hook in the story: Does he really want to go to the Patriots?
Green Bay Packers
During the Combine, rumors were already circulating that the Green Bay Packers were interested in a trade for Metcalf. On top of that, star running back Josh Jacobs had recently emphasized that the team needs a man who has already proven himself as a number one receiver.
At first glance, the receiver need on the part of the franchise is not great. After all, the Packers are quantitatively well positioned in terms of depth with Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed and Christian Watson. However, they lack a real game changer; they do not have the best wide receiver room.
Even though Metcalf himself is not among the top five receivers, he would be an upgrade for Green Bay. Especially since Watson tore his ACL at the end of last season and it is not clear when and, above all, how the 25-year-old will return.
Landing Spots: Las Vegas Raiders
Another obvious landing spot for Metcalf would be the Las Vegas Raiders. This is primarily due to Pete Carroll. The long-time successful coach of the Seahawks is now on the sideline in Vegas.
Carroll and Metcalf know each other, which could speak in favor of a trade. The Raiders have the financial resources to trade for Metcalf and offer him a decent contract. He would be a nice addition to the passing game around receivers Jacobi Meyers and last year’s standout rookie Brock Bowers.
However, the question remains. If Metcalf wants to go to a contender, what does he want with the rebuilding Raiders?
Dallas Cowboys
In his six years in the NFL, Metcalf has cracked the 1,000-yard mark three times. In 2024, he just missed it with 992 yards. He had his best season with 1,303 yards in his second year with the Seahawks.
Brian Schottenheimer was the offensive coordinator in Seattle at the time. He is now the head coach in Dallas and knows the strengths of the physically strong Metcalf like no other.
The fact that the Cowboys already have a star receiver in CeeDee Lamb does not have to be a disadvantage. Metcalf could relieve Lamb in the slot with his deep runs and make him even more dangerous. Dallas has freed up around $50 million in cap space through contract restructurings for Lamb and quarterback Dak Prescott. So the funds would definitely be there to trade for Metcalf.
DK Metcalf Landing Spots: Buffalo Bills
For years, the Buffalo Bills have been a contender for the Super Bowl. This will most likely continue to be the case in the coming season. In this respect, the Bills would be a landing spot that could be interesting for Metcalf.
The Bills – and especially NFL MVP Josh Allen – lacked a clear No. 1 receiver last season. After the departure of star player Stefon Diggs, neither rookie Keon Coleman (556 yards), Khalil Shakir (821) nor veteran Amari Cooper (297 in eight games) managed to fill this huge gap.
Metcalf offers absolute consistency, as evidenced by his six seasons in which he has delivered at least 900 yards each time. This could be the missing piece that allows the Bills to finally make a big splash.
