The Dallas Cowboys have failed to make the playoffs for the second year in a row with a 7-9-1 record. Nevertheless, owner Jerry Jones is proclaiming big goals for the future.
The Dallas Cowboys have missed out on the upcoming playoffs in this year’s NFL season. Nevertheless, longtime owner and general manager Jerry Jones did not shy away from making a sensational statement. The 83-year-old said in the Cowboys’ postseason press conference that he still has goals and dreams for his time as franchise owner. His biggest goal: “My life goal is to retire as the owner with the most Super Bowl wins.”
To put that into perspective, Jones has three wins with his Cowboys, which he won relatively quickly after taking over in Texas in 1989. In 1993, 1994, and 1996, he led the franchise to Lombardi Trophy victories with two different head coaches.
Jones significantly behind Kraft in Super Bowl wins
However, this only puts him in joint second place in the owner rankings of Super Bowl winners. Robert Kraft leads the way, and could go far again in the postseason with the New England Patriots after a 14-3 season.
Jones is not deterred: “That’s my goal. We have three. How many more do I need? [Robert Kraft] has how many? Six? So I have work to do. At least I’m already second on that list.” If the Patriots triumph, it would be the seventh Lombardi Trophy for Kraft, who could extend his lead.
So Jones would need a few championships to catch up. “America’s Team” is facing an important offseason anyway. The Cowboys have two first-round picks in the upcoming draft, but also two expiring contracts from key players.
Running back Javonte Williams and wide receiver George Pickens could become free agents. Jones is relaxed about this and hopes for an extension in both cases. Nevertheless, he also says: “Every team has gaps. That’s how the business works. But I still see six teams in the playoffs that weren’t there last year. I know it can happen. It’s all very close.”
Jones on the offseason: “We’re going to do some dramatic things.”
At the end of his remarks, he got specific. When asked about the upcoming offseason, he responded as follows: “One thing is certain: this offseason is very important. While Dak continues to perform as he has for us so far, we want to improve our own performance and be better than we were this year. The combination of these things gives us the incentive, dare I say, to blow the budget to achieve something now. Yes, we’re going to do some dramatic things.“
Jones’ son Stephen, who is also vice president, said of his father that he would ”give up a lot of his most important things to win another Super Bowl.”
