How much will Brock Purdy’s new contract with the San Francisco 49ers be worth? Of all people, a star from a divisional rival has weighed in on the matter.
Brock Purdy will enter the final year of his rookie contract with the San Francisco 49ers in 2024.
The question of how much the young quarterback will earn in his first big NFL deal was hotly debated during the past season, and the discussions have continued into the offseason.
Of all people, a star player from a division rival has now commented on the controversial topic.
On former NFL star Julian Edelman’s podcast “Games With Names,” wide receiver Puka Nacua of the Los Angeles Rams was asked if he thought Purdy deserved a new contract in the high $40 million range per year. “I don’t think so. I think in the mid-40s.”
Longtime Patriots star Edelman then noted that it would be a smart move for the franchise if Purdy didn’t accept a contract in the mid-40 million range.
“I think he seems like a smart guy,” Nacua replied. ‘They have a chance to still be in their title window. And I think if he were to go for a 5, then that window closes. Right?’
49ers: Purdy contract decisive for title chances?
Mr. Irrelevant from the 2022 draft, i.e., the last player to go off the board in that class, has been playing for a spot price in the NFL so far. His four-year contract is worth just $3.73 million.
However, the 25-year-old will soon be putting a much bigger dent in the cap space with a significantly higher salary.
The Niners have spent the offseason accordingly, parting ways with expensive contracts to get their books in order, but also assuming that Purdy’s payday is coming soon.
A contract worth $45 million per year would be a real bargain for the team at this point, with the assumption that the cap will continue to rise in the coming years. Numerous QBs in the league currently earn significantly more, with Cowboys star Dak Prescott leading the way with an average of $60 million.
Accordingly, the US media is speculating about a deal worth more than $50 million per season. However, as Nacua and Edelman have already pointed out, anything less than that would make it easier for the 49ers to plan their roster elsewhere.
