NFL: Brock Purdy of the San Francisco 49ers: Fans appalled by tax burden

It was payday for Brock Purdy at the San Francisco 49ers. But it was also payday for the state of California. The taxes are steep.

Brock Purdy is cashing in big time. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has landed a mega contract worth $265 million over five years, $181 million of which is guaranteed.

But for him, a mega contract also means mega taxes.

Because, of course, Purdy also has to pay taxes, and not just a little. This is partly because tax rates in California are particularly high.

According to calculations by the X account “ML Football,” Purdy will pay $19.567 million in federal taxes, $7.529 million in California state taxes, $1.254 million in social security contributions, and $1,686 in California disability insurance on his average annual salary of $53 million.

This results in a total tax burden of $28.352 million. The bottom line is that he is left with around $24.647 million per year. That is a tax burden of almost 54 percent.

The reactions were mixed.

“So sad, how is he going to live on just $24 million?” Purdy is obviously not poor. But one user summed it up: ‘The brother is losing an entire Josh Allen contract because of taxes.’
