NFL – Arizona Cardinals: Head Coach Jonathan Gannon fined after outburst

After a serious mistake by running back Emari Demercado, head coach Jonathan Gannon lost his temper. Now the Arizona Cardinals are taking action.

Head coach Jonathan Gannon’s outburst during his Arizona Cardinals’ NFL game against the Tennessee Titans (21:22) last Sunday has had costly repercussions.

According to ESPN, the Cardinals fined their head coach $100,000. This was preceded by a verbal and non-verbal outburst of anger against running back Emari Demercado. With the score at 21:6 in favor of the Cardinals at the start of the final quarter, Demercado threw away a sure 72-yard touchdown by dropping the ball before the goal line.

However, as the ball still landed in the end zone, possession went to the Titans. Instead of sealing the deal for his team, Demercado inadvertently sparked the Titans’ comeback, which ultimately resulted in their first victory.

Gannon apologized to the team

After this mistake, Gannon first gave his protégé a dressing-down on the sideline and then hit Demercado hard on the arm as he walked away.

On Monday, Gannon had already stated that he had apologized to Demercado and the team for his behavior. “I just told them that I got carried away by the events at that moment,” he said. The NFL announced that it would not be taking any further action. Gannon is the first head coach since Bruce Arians to be fined for a dispute with a player. Arians, then head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, hit his safety Andrew Adams on the helmet during the Wild Card Game against the Philadelphia Eagles in January 2022.
