NFL announces preseason opener – German player to feature in Hall of Fame Game

The teams for the 2025 Hall of Fame Game – the traditional start of the preseason – have been announced. The first warm-up game of the new NFL season will see two playoff participants from last season go head to head.

The 2025 Hall of Fame Game will take place on July 31 in Canton, where the Detroit Lions, featuring German-American Amon-Ra St. Brown, will face off against the Los Angeles Chargers.

The Hall of Fame made the announcement on Wednesday ahead of the NFL Draft.

“This game pits two teams that are legitimate contenders for Super Bowl LX next February,” said Jim Porter, president and CEO of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, in a statement. ”Having them face off right out of the gate in Canton, Ohio, should make for a dynamic start to another spectacular NFL season.”

The Lions were eliminated in the divisional round of last year’s playoffs by the Washington Commanders. The Chargers were knocked out in the wild card round by the Houston Texans.

Traditionally, the game takes place around the expansion of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This year, four new members will be inducted into the Hall of Fame two days after the game, including Chargers legend Antonio Gates.

The other preseason games will take place in the week after the Hall of Fame Game. The regular season kicks off on September 4, when the Philadelphia Eagles, as Super Bowl champions, will face an opponent yet to be determined.
