In the game against the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Giants tried out a play established by the Philadelphia Eagles. The result: no success and two players injured.
“It’s a copycat league” is one of the NFL’s mottos. In other words, if a team has success with a certain approach, a schematic trick or a type of player, it doesn’t take long for the competition to try it that way, too.
Last season, the Philadelphia Eagles attracted attention with a play that enabled them to cover a few yards for a touchdown or a new first down with a high success rate.
On the play, the quarterback lines up directly behind the centre, flanked by two or more players and behind a massive line of O-linemen and tight ends. At the snap, he charges into the fray, is pushed from behind, and the O-line tries to block a small corridor clear.
New York Giants fail with attempt
The New York Giants have recently shown that this play does not necessarily always lead to success. In the game against the Seattle Seahawks, the Giants used the “Eagles play” on the fourth try and failed.
To make matters worse, two Giants players were injured in the process. Centre John Michael Schmitz to his shoulder and tight end Daniel Bellinger to his knee.
Fitting for the entire evening: In the end, the Giants lost 3:24 and are already at a sporting low point.
