After several scandal emails were leaked, ex-Raiders coach Jon Gruden resigned from his post and sued the NFL. Now he will apparently attend the New Orleans Saints training camp as a counselor.
It was only recently that “ESPN” reported Gruden would not give up the lawsuit against the NFL “until the whole house burns down.”
Now the former Las Vegas Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach is expected to take a consulting role at New Orleans Saints training camp, the “New Orleans Time-Picayune” reports.
Gruden had already taken part in some of the Saints’ training sessions during the offseason, particularly to help Derek Carr, who played under Gruden in Oakland, learn the new offensive scheme.
It is unclear whether the 59-year-old will work with the Saints’ offence throughout the season. But an official hire seems unlikely, in part because Gruden’s lawsuit against the NFL and Commissioner Goodell is still ongoing.
In the course of NFL investigations surrounding the Washington Commanders, some 650,000 emails were reportedly examined in 2021. Several emails written by Gruden with racist, sexist and homophobic content went public, causing the then-head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders to resign.
Gruden as scapegoat
Gruden, according to the report, believes he was victimised by the NFL as a scapegoat. The emails under investigation would “incriminate everyone in the league”. Gruden never had a good relationship with NFL commissioner Goodell in particular.
The statement of claim, filed in November 2021, said: “The NFL and Commissioner Roger Goodell engaged in a malicious and orchestrated campaign to destroy the career and reputation of Jon Gruden, former head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.”
In addition, Gruden’s lawyers wrote that he was “forced to resign. “
Return to the NFL?
Since his lawsuit in late 2021, it had been quiet around the scandalous coach. It wasn’t until May 2023 that he was invited to the New Orleans practice facility for the first time by Saints head coach Dennis Allen.
In June, NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that Gruden had spent time with currently unemployed quarterback Carson Wentz to prepare him for a possible NFL comeback
So now he’ll once again be helping out at an NFL training camp, though the extent of his advisory role on the Saints’ coaching staff remains unclear.
