Bad news for the New Orleans Saints. Newcomer Marcus Maye is in trouble. The safety is arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault with a firearm
Munich – The new NFL season starts in a few days and the New Orleans Saints have a problem off the field.
Starting safety Marcus Maye was arrested Thursday on suspicion of aggravated assault with a firearm, the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office announced. Although he was allowed to leave custody for the time being after posting $30,000 bail, he was not present at the Saints’ practice.
His lawyer Eric Hessler has already denied the allegations in a statement obtained by “NFL Network”. It says Maye “vehemently” denies the allegations and looks forward to “defending himself when all the facts come to light”.
A Sheriff’s Office press release had previously stated, “Maye has been identified as the driver of a black SUV involved in an incident where he was accused of pointing a firearm at another vehicle occupied by several female juveniles. “
Maye faces NFL consequences
Saints coach Dennis Allen commented after one of the team’s practices, “We found out about it this morning and we’re still in the process of putting all the information together. So we’re not going to comment on it at this time until we get more information. “
For Maye, who signed a three-year, 28.5 million contract in March after a five-year stint with the Jets, the incident could also carry serious consequences before the NFL’s disciplinary committee. For instance, he was already arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol in February 2021.
Maye is now the second Saints pro to be criminally investigated, following Alvin Kamara.
