Minnesota Vikings: Costs for U.S. Bank Stadium skyrocket – expensive maintenance needed

The opening of U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, was just seven years ago. Yet the arena is already in need of maintenance in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

The home of the Minnesota Vikings is in danger of becoming a multi-million dollar grave in the coming years.

As reported by the Minneapolis Star Tribune, U.S. Bank Stadium is expected to need around $280 million in investment for repairs and upgrades over the next ten years to remain in “top condition”, according to an expert report. A whopping $48 million in maintenance costs will apparently be incurred for the next year alone.

The $1.1 billion stadium only opened in 2016, when it was the largest public-private project in Minnesota history. The city of Minneapolis paid $150 million, state taxpayers contributed $348 million and the team’s owners, the Wilf family, paid the balance at the time.

To this day, the Vikings venue is considered one of the most modern stadiums in the NFL. If it is to remain so in the future, a comprehensive financing plan will be necessary to cope with the exploding costs.

Minnesota Vikings: State budget to cover stadium costs

“Is there enough money to cover those costs? The answer to that is no,” said Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority Chairman Michael Vekich.

The Vikings and Minnesota taxpayers pay annually into the stadium’s investment fund, which currently stands at $16 million, according to the report. But the stadium’s audio-visual complex alone, one of the central areas at events, will require $14 million in maintenance costs, according to the report.

Vekich stressed after the release of the stadium report, which alone cost $527,500, that the state legislature will be asked for $48 million in funding for 2024.
