According to an explosive report, the Los Angeles Rams wanted to trade quarterback Matthew Stafford “by any means necessary” during this year’s offseason. However, a trade partner was not found.
Matthew Stafford was apparently on the verge of being cut by the Los Angeles Rams in the 2023 offseason. As NFL insider Michael Lombardi reported on the “PatMcAfeeShow”, the franchise wanted to trade the quarterback to another team.
According to the report, the Rams actively approached other franchises and tried to “get rid of” the signal caller. The background is said to be bonus payments to Stafford, which LA would have avoided in the event of a trade.
“Any team could have had Stafford “
“Before the bonus became active, the Rams were trying to trade Stafford by any means necessary,” Lombardi said. “Any team could have had him. The problem was that the new team would then have had to pay the bonus.”
The bonus was about $59 million that Stafford was entitled to under his contract. “The Rams knew they couldn’t get around the US$59 million – unless they traded the playmaker,” Lombardi explained. “They know they have cap issues. “
Stafford gave Rams a Super Bowl ring
As we all know, however, a trade did not occur. The 35-year-old veteran quarterback is entering his third season with the Rams. He took Los Angeles to Super Bowl LVI in February 2022, but Stafford and the Rams missed the playoffs last season.
The team continues to struggle with the aftermath of its Super Bowl triumph. Since 2022, the franchise has been in a constant state of flux. However, the Rams sacrificed a lot for the title and therefore have little draft capital and few financial options in the near future.
The $59 million to Stafford has not contributed to this in any positive way.
