Rams coach McVay comments on Akers’ future

Rams head coach Sean McVay told the obligatory matchday press conference that using Akers in the game against the Bucs was “a possibility”.

Equally, however, the 36-year-old did not rule out the Rams releasing their mercurial running back.

“That’s a possibility as well, but like I said, I think the first option is to weigh some of the different things we’ve put on the table, see what it could possibly look like, and deal with how we got here and where my responsibilities lie. And then we’ll see what comes next,” McVay was vague about Akers’ future with the Rams.

Los Angeles Rams: stay or trade

So in the end, where does Akers’ athletic future lie? Will he stay with the Rams, be released, or still be traded in the next window?

That’s a difficult question to answer because the situation remains murky.

According to his head coach, running back McVay has clearly signalled his willingness to stay with the Rams. So he rejoined the practice he franchise on Thursday.

An unnamed NFL Insider source claims the Rams rejected multiple offers for Akers before the trade deadline just ended.

Another source, however, claims the opposite. The franchise is said to have specifically offered the player to several teams, but received rejections everywhere.

So how do you deal with a player who is not clear whether he is welcome and needed by his team or not?

In addition to letting Akers play, he could switch teams in the 2023 offseason. If the Rams release the running back this season, the team would be due a dead cap of just over one US dollar.

Akers played his last game for the Rams in Week 5, rushing for 33 yards in a 22-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
