It’s been official for a few days now: Jimmy Garoppolo no longer has a future with the San Francisco 49ers. At the same time, the other 31 teams aren’t really jockeying for the experienced quarterback.
San Francisco/Munich – It has been a certainty in the Bay Area for a little more than a week: Jimmy Garoppolo no longer has a future with the San Francisco 49ers.
The quarterback, who led the Niners to the Super Bowl in February 2020 and almost repeated the feat last season, must make way for his younger successor Trey Lance.
However, the 30-year-old will have to wait for a final farewell from the Pacific coast – possibly even longer than he would like.
San Francisco 49ers: Garoppolo must continue to wait
As NFL insider Ian Rapoport has learned, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan are still trying to find a suitable trade partner for their former star.
However, with many teams now having a suitable playmaker, the 49ers face a seemingly impossible task. “Who would want to take on that contract, who needs a starting quarterback – there’s just no clear option,” Rapoport described the situation to “NFL Network.”
Instead, he said, San Francisco wants to keep its feet on the ground and hold on to Garoppolo for as long as possible, even if they definitely don’t plan on using him again.

“The way I understand the situation, they’re willing to wait until cut-down day,” the NFL insider opined.
Jimmy Garoppolo: 49ers willing to wait until last second
Garoppolo is currently battling his way back into team practice after an injury and subsequent surgery, and his first throwing attempts are promising, Rapoport said.
So on 30 August, when the 32 teams have to reduce their squads from 80 to 53 players, a final decision is expected to be made around Jimmy G.
Rapoport went on to say that no decision would be made before then. Should another quarterback get injured, they would like to get value for the playmaker via trade.
“The way I see it, they’re going to keep him around as long as they can to see if another trade window opens up for him. At some point, and very likely, they will part with him one way or another. “
Jimmy Garoppolo: Change drama has dragged on for months
The draft drama surrounding the former quarterback shooting star has been dragging on for nearly a year now.The 49ers traded up to the third spot in the first round of the 2021 draft to select their new pass rusher in Trey Lance.
Garoppolo remained the starter in 2021 because Lance still lacked experience. The 49ers finally made the switch at the quarterback position in late July this year.
Garoppolo was long considered a possible candidate with the Seattle Seahawks or the Carolina Panthers, but those teams now appear to be out of the question.
By the end of August at the latest, there will be an answer as to where he will be moving to.
