The NFL has a new speed record holder. At least if the (unofficial) numbers from the New York Giants’ training camp are anything to go by

Until now, Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill was considered the fastest NFL player in the world. At 23.2 miles per hour (about 37.3 Km/h), the now 29-year-old was tracked during an NFL game in 2016.

From next season, however, a new speed superstar could knock Hill off his throne – and then officially. As Giants beat writer Art Stapleton reported, 21-year-old Jalin Hyatt was clocked at 24 miles per hour (about 38.6 Km/h) at New York Giants training camp.

The reporters in attendance were informed of the new record by a grinning Daniel Jones.

I was interviewing NYGiants rookie Jalin Hyatt when Daniel Jones walked by.

“Ask him if he hit 24 miles per hour today!” Jones joked.

So I did.

Hyatt didn’t know yet, but told me the team GPS has tracked him as fast as 24 mph “a few times” so far in camp.

Hyatt dropped deep in draft

The wide receiver was considered a potential first- or second-round pick before the NFL draft. But slid all the way to the third round (in part because of a comparatively disappointing 4.4-second 40-yard time for him) and was selected by the Giants at No. 73.

Hyatt has made a strong impression in training camp so far, according to several beat writers. The rookie will have to compete primarily against fellow receivers Darius Slayton, Isaiah Hodgins, Parris Campbell and Sterling Shepard in New York.
