In the event of quarterback Tom Brady’s cancellation, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had developed a multi-level backup plan at the Free Agency.
After a long wait, quarterback Tom Brady decided against the New England Patriots and for an engagement with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
However, as “NBC” reports, the Bucs had a concrete backup plan in case “TB12” did not decide to go with the franchise.
According to the report, Plan B was the former New Orleans Saint Teddy Bridgewater, who then joined the Carolina Panthers before the Brady deal was announced.
Winston only a stopgap measure by the Buccaneers
Jameis Winston, who Tampa Bay signed with the first pick in the 2015 draft and who also became a free agent after last season, was only the third choice.
In his five seasons at Tampa Bay, Winston made 111 turnovers (88 interceptions, 23 lost fumbles) in only 72 games.
Although the 26-year-old managed 61.6 per cent of his passes for 19,737 yards and 121 touchdowns, the Buccaneers did not make the playoffs with Winston as starting quarterback and only had one season with more wins than losses.
