Adrian Amos is the fourth Packers player to join the Jets this year. Previously, two receivers followed quarterback Aaron Rodgers to New York. It shows a problem for Packers officials. One comment.
The Green Bay Packers and Aaron Rodgers. For 18 years, the Wisconsin franchise was automatically associated with the star quarterback and four-time MVP. Until it started to crumble.
And it had been crumbling for several years. Then this spring, it came to a parting of the ways after weeks of back and forth from both sides. Aaron Rodgers moved to the New York Jets. It was not to be the only change.
On Rodgers, Green Bay’s top receiver Allen Lazard and his supporting cast Randall Cobb also answered the call from New York. In just one offseason, Green Bay was suddenly not only rid of the heart of their offense, they also had both arms amputated – if you want to put it that drastically. Adequate replacements for the two? So far, no.
Amos the next prop to go to the Jets
Adrian Amos is the next mainstay to join the New York Jets. The 30-year-old did not miss a single game for the Packers in the past four years (in which he earned 36 million US dollars).
Apparently, they could not agree on a new contract with those responsible in Green Bay. Now he plays for “only” four million US dollars in New York. A sum that the Packers’ cap space would have easily paid. Instead, another cornerstone of the team is gone. Because the Packers front office has a different plan.
What is the plan, anyway?
But which one? That is the question many are currently asking. It doesn’t look like a complete shake-up. Established players such as tight end Robert Tonyan or defensive end Dean Lowry may leave, but the season will not be given away.
New support comes mainly in the form of talented players from the NFL draft. Otherwise, the front office is probably relying on what the squad still has to offer. The strategy so far seems opaque.
And whether what the squad currently has to offer is enough to play at the top in the coming season leaves at least some experts in doubt. Packers fans can only hope that the front office is not as negligent as it appears from the outside.
