Amon-Ra St. Brown has a lot on his mind in 2023. He wants to finally make the playoffs with the Detroit Lions and he wants to continue to mature into a leader himself.
With ambitious goals, Amon-Ra St. Brown has never held back. Higher, faster, further: the Detroit Lions wide receiver wants to take the next logical steps in 2023.
After a strong rookie season and an increase in the important second NFL year, that is in season three for him personally “a greater leadership role”, he wants to take on more responsibility and be a role model for younger players.
“I think I’m old enough now to be a leader. I’m just looking forward to being a leader and winning games,” the 23-year-old told the Detroit Free Press.
Important piece of the puzzle in the Lions offense
He totaled 1,161 yards as well as six touchdowns last season. He’s a key piece of the puzzle in the Lions’ offense and quarterback Jared Goff’s favorite face-off spot, and he was part of the reason the team nearly made the playoffs after a strong rally.
The reward: participation in the Pro Bowl. And the respect of opponents, specifically the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers, St. Brown learned. “I talked to other players who told me, ‘Boy, you guys really stepped it up toward the end.’ We didn’t want to play you in the playoffs,'” St. Brown said.
Here, the next logical step as a team is the postseason. “I know we won a couple games last year, we were pretty strong, but I really want to get to the playoffs,” St. Brown said.
Amon-Ra St. Brown: “We know what we’re capable of “
He said he feels that Detroit, as a city, wants it badly. “I feel like as a team we want it badly, too. I feel like we have the guys that can do it, so I’m looking forward to winning games week in and week out,” he said.
The offense has delivered quite well in 2022, St. Brown said. Last season, the Lions ranked eighth in passing offense with 4,444 yards and 29 touchdowns, and 11th on the ground with 2,179 yards and 23 touchdowns.
“Obviously you want to be number one in every category, and I think that’s what we strive for as an offense. We know what we’re capable of. I think we did a pretty good job of that last season, but you can always improve,” St. Brown said.
