Dallas Cowboys part ways with Mike McCarthy: Jerry Jones should finally step aside – a commentary

The Dallas Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy are parting ways after all – and only losers are left behind. Jerry Jones is once again not making a good impression and should finally face the consequences. A commentary.

So now it’s happening after all. The Dallas Cowboys and head coach Mike McCarthy are ending their collaboration. According to reports, a contract extension failed due to differing views on the contract term.

Regardless of whether you think the split itself is right or wrong, the chaotic manner and circumstances once again confirm that general manager Jerry Jones has long been more of a curse than a blessing for his own franchise.

A week after Black Monday, while other teams have been quick and decisive in making their decisions and holding talks with potential new head coaches, Jones has wasted valuable time.

There is nothing wrong with sitting down after the season and discussing how the season went, where the problems were and whether there is common ground for the future.

But the fact that they apparently didn’t even talk about the possible length of that future collaboration during these talks, but that the negotiations only failed days later, is actually an absurdity.

Because that way, everyone involved comes off as a loser. Even McCarthy himself, who is now on the market, but very late to get one of the available spots. The plans of the various teams are too far advanced.

Jerry Jones is a burden for the Dallas Cowboys

The Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints are said to be interested, but the Bears in particular wanted to talk to McCarthy days ago. However, Jones refused permission – one of many decisions that cause head-shaking.

And yet it fits perfectly into a management style that lacks any kind of far-reaching strategy and vision.

In recent months, the contract extensions of Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb have already become melodramatic performances – only to end up with Jones paying gigantic sums of money, which were probably so high because Jones backed himself into a corner.

Lamb only resumed training at all just before the start of the season, after going on strike for a long time during the negotiations. Accordingly, the receiver did not look fit in the first few weeks of the season.

At the same time, Jones refrained from strengthening the team in the offseason, but still called it an “all-in” year. The tenor: the team should prove itself. But there was a lack of quality and depth, and injuries ultimately caused the season to collapse.

Bill Belichick apparently stood ready

According to “Fox” reports, the Cowboys could have had Bill Belichick this offseason. The coaching legend was reportedly very interested, but there was no indication from Jones that the position would even be available. That’s why Belichick signed with North Carolina College.

If true, this once again highlights the lack of foresight of the general manager, who is also the owner of the franchise and seems to be increasingly overwhelmed by his omnipotence. What head coach does Jones want to get this late in the game? And more importantly, what coach puts themselves through this?

What the Cowboys need now is a complete reset. And that means a new GM who has a clear plan for the future and can bring a breath of fresh air to the franchise. One who can truly make “America’s Team” a flagship again.

Jones is not the right man for the job – but the 82-year-old apparently refuses to accept that. Resigning as GM is out of the question for him, he recently made clear, reminiscing about why he bought the team in the first place. The answer: because it’s exactly what he wanted to do for the rest of his life; deciding how to spend money.

This is not good news for the many fans of the Cowboys. Jones is in the process of destroying his life’s work. If he loves his franchise, he’ll step aside. Otherwise, more bad years with even worse decisions loom.
