No. 1 pick Caleb Williams is supposed to put the Chicago Bears on the road to success. But Chairman George McCaskey warns against expecting too much.
The hype in Chicago is huge. Number 1 pick Caleb Williams is seen as the savior of the long-suffering Chicago Bears.
The quarterback will lead the team in the first game of the season against the Tennessee Titans. The fans at Soldier Field are eagerly awaiting Williams’ NFL debut.
George McCaskey, chairman of the Bears, apparently fears expectations are too high and is asking fans to be patient. “Usually the No. 1 pick in the draft comes into a situation where it’s going to take a while for things to come together,” McCaskey told the Sun-Times.
That’s different with the Bears, he said, because Williams has a good roster that has been bolstered well: “Caleb has a lot of support – a solid defense, good receivers, a good offensive line, a good running game, tight ends.” However, that doesn’t change the fact that Williams, for all his talent, is ultimately a rookie.
“I hope people will be patient. There will be development problems. He will make mistakes. That’s part of the learning process for any young quarterback,” McCaskey said.
“I understand the impatience. That’s to be expected to some degree. But Williams can’t do it alone. We’ve all seen some very talented quarterbacks who didn’t have the help around them and they struggled because of it. “
Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields as cautionary examples
Examples from the recent past include Mitch Trubisky and Justin Fields, who were also picked in the 1st round by the Bears and failed to live up to high expectations. The expectations were nowhere near as high as they are now with Williams.
The good preseason has further increased the hype. All four pre-season games were won. Williams made a good impression in the games against the Cincinnati Bengals and the Buffalo Bills, throwing a touchdown pass and going without an interception.
“He’s been great,” McCaskey said, praising: ‘He’s a hard worker, a great teammate, he’s got a smile on his face. ’
