During the offseason, some NFL players make negative headlines for their criminal behaviour. This has recently included Panthers receiver Shi Smith, who was arrested in South Carolina.
Charlotte/Munich – NFL players enjoy an extremely privileged life, but that doesn’t stop many from making negative headlines with criminal offences.
The latest example of this development is Shi Smith of the Carolina Panthers, who had a run-in with the police in the US state of South Carolina.
Carolina Panthers: receiver Shi Smith arrested by police
The 23-year-old receiver was arrested for possession of an illegal handgun in Union County, “ESPN” reports. In addition, drugs were found on Smith, which the young pass receiver was also believed to be trying to sell.
As if that were not enough, the former star of the South Carolina Gamecocks was allegedly driving his car at excessive speeds: 16 to 24 miles per hour (about 26 to 39 km/h) Smith was allegedly speeding.
However, the youngster was not held for long: Against a total bail of 6,000 US dollars (5,000 of which for drug possession alone), the Panthers player was allowed to leave the police station a little later.
Shi Smith: Police may find marijuana in player’s possession
As a police source explained in response to an “ESPN” enquiry, the drugs found are believed to be marijuana. The exact amount that was in the receiver’s possession is not known.
The Carolina Panthers have not yet commented on the incident. However, the club is aware of the case and the course of the investigation, a Panthers spokesperson confirmed when asked by “ESPN”.
Smith will face his final court appearance on 14 June, the second day of the team’s mini camp.
Second season in the NFL
