Atlanta Falcons: Quarterback situation open according to offensive coordinator Zac Robinson

The Atlanta Falcons are finally looking to attack after three stagnant years under Arthur Smith. One crucial question is the quarterback.

The Atlanta Falcons are focusing on a fresh start. Head coach Arthur Smith was sacked after three years without any real development, Raheem Morris is the new head coach.

Zac Robinson, who like Morris was previously with the Los Angeles Rams, has taken over as offensive coordinator.

With a squad that already has a lot of talent in key areas, the aim is to finally take a step forward and make the playoffs. The upcoming quarterback will play a very important role in this, as the Falcons probably had their biggest weakness at this position last season.

Robinson has now spoken in detail about this position for the first time – and revealed that he is not looking for a specific type of player. “Whether it’s someone more for the pocket or someone who’s also mobile, we’re looking to get the best guy possible,” Robinson said in a press conference.

Current quarterbacks Desmond Ridder and Taylor Heinicke are also part of the evaluations. “We’re looking at those guys. All options are on the table,” said the 37-year-old.

Robinson himself played quarterback in the NFL from 2010 to 2013 and has worked on offensive guru Sean McVay’s coaching staff with the Rams since 2019. Over the past two years, he was responsible for coaching the quarterbacks and the passing game. Robinson therefore knows what is important. And what he wants to see from a quarterback.

“He has to be the most competitive guy in the locker room,” says Robinson. The quarterback must have “the whole inventory of throws” to offer.

Question marks behind Ridder and Heinicke

Neither Ridder nor Heinicke were able to convince in the past season. The third-round pick from 2022 started 13 games and had a below-average record of twelve touchdowns and twelve interceptions, as well as fumbling twelve times. The ball was lost seven times.

This susceptibility to turnovers ultimately cost him his job as starting quarterback for a short time in the middle of the season. Heinicke got his chance, but didn’t do much better. His only win came on Christmas Eve against the Indianapolis Colts.

With a cap hit of 8.5 million dollars, it wouldn’t be a big surprise if the Falcons were to let Heinicke go. The dead cap would be just two million dollars. Regarding Ridder, Robinson said he’s “excited to see more of Des. “

However, it seems unlikely that the Falcons will actually go with Ridder as their starter. Atlanta has been the favorite to sign Kirk Cousins for weeks. The contract of the 35-year-old, who is currently suffering from a torn Achilles tendon, with the Minnesota Vikings is set to expire and Cousins will become a free agent.

The Falcons have also been linked to other names, including Justin Fields. As things stand, Atlanta will draft eighth in the draft – possibly too late to secure one of the top prospects
