For three years Mason Rudolph has been Ben Roethlisberger’s backup with the Pittsburgh Steelers. His contract expires after the upcoming NFL season, but the quarterback already has clear ideas for his future

Mason Rudolph’s future is uncertain, the Steelers quarterback’s rookie contract expires after the upcoming season. Nevertheless, he himself has very clear ideas for his future career. “At the end of the day, I want to be in Pittsburgh. I was drafted by this team, it’s my home. I want to keep playing here,” the 25-year-old told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

So far, the young playmaker, whom the Steelers drafted in round three in 2018, has only ever been a backup to Steelers legend Ben Roethlisberger. Rudolph isn’t content with that role in the long run, though. “My goal is to be a starting quarterback in this league for our team,” Rudolph said.

Pittsburgh Steelers also sign Dwayne Haskins

Whether he gets that chance is hard to gauge. This season, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin continues to rely on the 39-year-old “Big Ben”. With Dwayne Haskins, a former first-round pick was signed who could give Rudolph competition for the status of quarterback of the future.

The fact that Rudolph will be a free agent after this season further complicates matters. Either the Steelers commit to him on a long-term deal or he would have to be willing to sign a one-year contract to compete for a bigger payday. However, the same is true for Haskins, who signed a one-year deal.

In his three seasons in the NFL so far, Rudolph has made 15 appearances. He completed about 62 percent of his throws and registered 2089 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and ten interceptions.
