For the first time in history, an NFL playoff game in the coming season will not be broadcast on TV as usual.
As the league and “NBCUniversal” announced, a game of the Wild Card Round on 13 January 2024 will be shown exclusively on the streaming service “Peacock”. Only in the cities of the two opponents will the game also be offered on TV as usual.
Meanwhile, the cost of the rights for said single match is going through the roof. As the Wall Street Journal reports, the subsidiary of Comcast, which also owns Sky, is paying 110 million dollars for the game.
NFL sets new standards in TV marketing
NFL Vice President Hans Schroeder expressed excitement about the broadcasting innovation. “Expanding digital distribution of NFL content while maintaining a wide reach for our games remains a top priority for the league,” he said. Bringing an exciting NFL playoff game exclusively to Peacock’s streaming platform is the next step in that strategy. “
The new TV contract will also take effect from the coming season and, according to the Associated Press, will bring the league a groundbreaking 113 billion dollars (approx. 104 billion euros) over the next eleven years up to and including the 2033 season – an increase of up to approx. 80 per cent compared to the previous deal, according to Forbes.
