Tom Brady: Draft is “the most overrated weekend on the NFL calendar”

Tom Brady was once selected as number 199 in the NFL Draft. No wonder he now revealed how overrated he thinks the talent selection is. The day after is more important for rookies and teams, he said.

Tom Brady and the NFL Draft are unlikely to be friends anymore.

On the “Rushmore on X” podcast, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, Las Vegas Raiders shareholder, and Fox TV expert made it clear that he thinks the event is overrated.

According to him, how teams develop their young players is more important than good picks.

“It’s one thing to draft them. But then you have to develop them. In my opinion, that’s more important,” Brady said. “With the NFL Draft, we had the most overrated weekend of the entire NFL calendar. Because 99 percent of these guys don’t have a significant impact in their first year. Most of these players won’t contribute until the 2026 season.”

Tips for rookies: “What are you doing on day two?”

Brady also gave drafted rookies a tip: Whether you’re the number one pick or number 199, every player should ask themselves how they can improve from the day after the draft: “What are you doing on day two? How do I prepare?”

Tom Brady was selected by the New England Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 draft. In his first season with the team, he worked his way up from number four to number two quarterback, but only made three throws.

Brady made his breakthrough in his second NFL year. In his long career, he won the Super Bowl seven times and was named Super Bowl MVP five times.
