Where will the first NFL game take place in Germany? The answer: in Munich, Frankfurt or Düsseldorf. Sebastian Vollmer looks at the selection process at ran and is sure: “There will be a decision around the Super Bowl. “
London – Munich, Frankfurt or Düsseldorf – between these three cities it will thus be decided in the coming months at which location in Germany the NFL will stage games.
“And 95 per cent of them will already be in the coming year 2022,” as Sebastian Vollmer lets slip.
The German ex-professional and two-time Super Bowl champion is working very closely with the NFL on this major project and is involved in all the developments. On the sidelines of the “NFL International Combine” at London’s Tottenham Stadium, Vollmer reveals in an interview with ran: “A total of between 13 and 16 cities applied to host the game, of which Munich, Düsseldorf and Frankfurt are now the only ones left.” Vollmer explains, “[…] that we see the most potential in these cities to host an NFL game and also to be able to handle all the other requirements. “
NFL wants long-term partnership
The NFL is interested in a long-term partnership and wants the new location to provide the league with a kind of “all-round package”. Something like in London: there is an academy for American football players, which in the best case scenario should pave the way for the talents to go to college.
The NFL finally wants to conquer Germany as a new market. Including an official “NFL Germany Office” with its own “Head Of Germany”.
So things are really getting serious – and the NFL is getting straight down to business. “We are now going into further analysis with the three cities and will then decide who will ultimately get the NFL game in Germany,” says Vollmer. When asked when this decision will be made, he grins mischievously and adds: “I would mark the Super Bowl for that. The final decision should be made around that time. “
Many NFL teams want to play in Germany
So it remains exciting. As does the question of possible teams that could meet in Germany. “A lot of NFL teams have applied to be the first to play in Germany,” explains the two-time Super Bowl champion, “including the Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks, teams that are very popular with fans in Germany. Who he will actually become in the end, you still have to wait and see.”
So patience is the order of the day. But football has finally started rolling – and around the Super Bowl, all NFL fans in Germany will finally know where they have to travel to in autumn 2022 to see their heroes live.
