NFL star Russell Wilson has taken a stand on a report that his charity organisation would only use a quarter of donations for charitable purposes.
NFL star Russell Wilson’s “Why Not You Foundation” has been part of negative coverage lately.
Jason Wolf of “USA Today” reported that the Denver Broncos quarterback’s charity organisation is said to have invested only about a quarter of the donations it received for charity in 2020 and 2021.
Wilson defends his charity organisation
The quarterback has now responded to these allegations via Twitter, where he posted a video.
“Since 2014, the ‘Why Not You Foundation’ has been fortunate to partner with world class partners to drive significant growth with over tens of millions of dollars in partnerships! Incredible partners like Safeway, Albertsons, SeattleChildrens, the wnyacademy and more,” Wilson said in his video message.
“We invest in the work and don’t need the recognition. Teamwork and making a difference will always come first,” Wilson said at the end of his video, defending himself against the accusations, “As we continue to grow, we will always care more about impact than recognition. “
Did only 24.3 per cent of donations go to charity?
According to USA Today, the Why Not You Foundation reportedly passed on a total of $600,000 in donations to charity in 2020 and 2021, but that was only 24.3 per cent of total donations.
In the same period, however, the charity spent a whopping US$1.1 million on staff salaries, with Chief Strategy Officer Ryan Tarpley collecting US$222,500 in salary in 2021 alone, according to the report.
