Following the controversial roughing the passer call between the Los Angeles Chargers and Miami Dolphins, the NFL is consulting on the rule. Decisions could become reviewable in the future.
Munich/New York – Is the NFL on the verge of another landmark rule change? It sure looks like it.
NFL general manager Troy Vincent is bringing a review of “roughing the passer” decisions to the March meeting of team owners. “The officials have been very consistent and accurate, but they’re only human,” Vincent expressed. He said there will be a “healthy discussion” about whether the fouls are reviewable, appealable or simply reviewable.
The discussion focused on the upset scene from the previous game day.
The game between the Los Angeles Chargers and the Miami Dolphins saw a highly controversial roughing the passer call by the referees.
Although Miami pass rusher Jaelan Phillips brought Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert to the ground in a quasi-textbook fashion and then braced himself so he didn’t land his full weight on Herbert, the referees ruled the action a foul. Around the NFL, the call sparked pure outrage.
The rule is likely to come under scrutiny at the next meeting of NFL owners in March. Alleged wrong decisions like the one mentioned could thus be history in the future.
