The NFL is mourning the death of a historic quarterback. Roman Gabriel passed away at the age of 83, his family announced.
The former Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia Eagles star was the first American-Filipino quarterback in NFL history.
Gabriel was drafted No. 2 overall in 1962. Seven years later, he was voted NFL MVP after throwing for 2,549 yards and 24 touchdown passes.
He still holds the Rams’ franchise record today with 154 touchdown passes.
“We mourn the loss of Rams legend and football pioneer Roman Gabriel,” wrote the Rams on the occasion of the former quarterback’s death on “X”, formerly Twitter. Gabriel played for the Rams for eleven years and for the Eagles for five years.
After his career ended, Gabriel worked briefly as an NFL presenter for “CBS” and was also involved in acting as an active player.
The former NFL star made guest appearances in the films “Skidoo” with Jackie Gleason from 1968 and “The Undefeated” from 1969 with John Wayne and Rock Hudson.
