Report: NFL plans the end of the Wonderlic Test

The Wonderlic Test has been the talk of the NFL for decades as an IQ test. Now it’s on the verge of being phased out. That’s what the league is said to have announced to teams.

Munich – The Wonderlic Test is history! This is reported by the news agency “AP” with reference to a memo that the NFL sent to the 32 teams. According to the memo, the league plans to eliminate the intelligence test from the scouting programme before the draft.

The Wonderlic test is a common IQ test in the USA. It requires 50 questions to be answered in twelve minutes. According to the test, which was developed in the 1930s, 20 correct answers correspond to an IQ of 100. Teams hope to gain insights into the players’ ability to grasp the countless complex plays in the playbook.

Disputed IQ test

Critics, on the other hand, see the Wonderlic Test as an inaccurate and discriminatory approach to the player application process. In addition, the results are not very representative, as it is unclear how seriously the players take the test or whether they even know about the test situation.

Punter Pat McInally was the only player in NFL history to score a full 50 on the test in 1975, while Tom Brady scored 33.

More changes planned at Combine

In the letter, the league also informs teams of possible penalties for “inappropriate” interviewing of football players – with measures ranging up to the loss of a draft pick.

In addition, future drills at the NFL Scouting Combine will be designed to more closely resemble situations in professional football. For example, wide receivers and tight ends will run crossing routes instead of wheel routes in the future.
