NFL: Will tush push be banned? Decision on rule change postponed

Tush push divides opinion in the NFL. Should it be banned or not? The teams cannot agree, despite their best efforts.

Tush push. Brotherly shove. Or simply: quarterback sneak Philadelphia edition.

It has almost become a political issue. The Philadelphia Eagles’ trademark play is causing anger for some and incomprehension for others.

At the annual owners’ meeting, the Green Bay Packers proposed a ban on the play. 24 of the 32 teams would have had to vote in favor of making the play illegal. According to NFL insider Ari Meirov, this majority was not reached – which means that the Tush Push remains part of the game. 16 team owners were in favor of banning the play – which means that eight more votes are needed to enforce it. However, no vote was taken.

Instead, the decision was postponed.

Because the issue is not settled. As Meirov and Ian Rapoport both report, the teams have agreed to postpone the discussions until the next meeting in May. And then the vote should also go ahead, as NBC Sports reports.

In favor: Green Bay Packers

Unsurprisingly, the petitioners are in favor of abolishing the tush push against the play.

According to General Manager Brian Gutekunst, doctors are very concerned. Almost all 22 players are in a confined space and fall on top of each other. The risk of injury is “much too high”.

“This could lead to catastrophic injuries,” Gutekunst continued. The official statement also criticized the fact that it would disrupt “the flow of the game”. The Packers have tried to copy the play multiple times in the past, but have failed miserably at times.

In favor: Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills, in the form of head coach Sean McDermott, have also publicly called for a ban on the play. “I think the risk of injury is just too great,” he said.

“However,” McDermott limited himself, “there is hardly any medical data on it so far.” The Bills, with quarterback Josh Allen, use the classic quarterback sneak more than almost any other team in the league.

In favor: Dallas Cowboys

Some might assume that the Dallas Cowboys, due to their divisional rivalry alone, would have to be against a play that the Eagles have helped to popularize.

According to co-owner Stephen Jones, the Cowboys would like to see “consistency in the interpretation of the rules.” After all, pushing “is also not allowed. A linebacker is not allowed to push an offensive lineman. Why should a quarterback be allowed to push?”

Pro: Los Angeles Rams

In an interview, Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay reiterated that he doesn’t want to “ban” a play “because someone else does it better than we do.”

“What bothers me about it is the formation. It looks like a rugby play.” McVay advocated banning the formation, not the play. However, that would also make a victory formation illegal.

Against: Philadelphia Eagles

It doesn’t take much explanation as to why the Philadelphia Eagles are against the play being banned. After all, no one else uses it as often or as well as the Eagles.

“We’ve worked hard to perfect the play,” explained head coach Nick Sirianni. “It wouldn’t be fair to just ban it.”

Opposed by: New England Patriots

Head coach Mike Vrable appeared to be a big fan of the play. “There are some plays that are hard to stop, so we shouldn’t want to get rid of them,” said the new coach of the six-time champions.

“Should we now ban Lamar Jackson from running because it’s hard to defend?” He did not reveal whether he would practice the play with the Patriots.

In contrast: Baltimore Ravens

Currently, Head Coach John Harbaugh is against banning the play. ‘It’s a normal football play,’ he said.

However, he left himself a back door: if doctors were to be in favor of abolishing it, he would change his mind.

On the other hand: Cleveland Browns

“I’m not in favor of simply banning the play,” said Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski.

Instead, the Browns want to perfect the play themselves in the offseason. “We’ll work on it.“

In contrast: Houston Texans

Instead of banning the Tush Push, head coach DeMeco Ryans wants to find ways to stop it.

”It would be hard to punish a team for doing something very well,” he says.

On the other hand: New York Jets

“It’s a good play, and it’s very difficult to stop,” said Aaron Glenn of the New York Jets, praising the Eagles for their design.

“It’s not my job to ban the play. My job is to find a remedy for it,” the head coach continued.
