The Washington football team, formerly the Redskins, has decided on a new name and logo. To be unveiled on 2 February 2022, seven names are still in the running. However, one popular name suggestion has already been put to rest.
Munich/Washington D.C. – For two years now, the Washington football team has operated under this interim name. The franchise, formerly called the Redskins, dropped the name in 2020 out of respect for Native Americans.
The search for a new name and brand was supposed to take only a few months, but dragged on. Now, after nearly a year, there is a new name and logo for the football team in the US capital.
Unveiling in February – Wolves won’t do it
On Tuesday morning (local time), the franchise revealed plans for the rebranding on its channels. “We can’t wait to bring you our new team name on February 2, 2022,” WFT president Jason Wright told the website.
“We are confident that fans in D.C., Maryland and beyond will find themselves embracing this identity,” Wright continued.
In his statement, however, he immediately ruled out a name: “I can already confirm that after long and careful consideration, our name will not be ‘Wolves,’ ‘Redwolves’ or anything like that.”
He immediately followed up with the reason: “We know this name was a fan favourite, but trademarks from other teams would limit the ability to make this name our own,” the team president explained.
“Don’t risk legal consequences “
The statement continues: “We are aware of the importance of the new name for the fan base and the future of our franchise. It is all the more important that we do not risk any legal consequences with the new name. “
The wait is almost over

The biggest US team associated with the name “Wolves” is the Minnesota Timberwolves in the NBA. There are also the Arkansas State Red Wolves in college sports and the Chicago Wolves ice hockey club, all of which hold rights to the name.
It is not yet known in what context the new brand will be announced. The Washington Football Team is currently the only team in the NFL without an “epithet”.
According to WFT co-CEO Tanya Snyder, the names “Armada”, “Presidents”, “Brigade”, “Redhawks”, “Commanders” and “Defenders” are still in the running. Keeping the name “Football Team” is also an option.
