NFL: Tom Brady asked about comeback – league “not thrilled”

Tom Brady admits to having considered a return to the NFL. But the league was anything but enthusiastic about the idea.

Tom Brady thought about a comeback.

The seven-time Super Bowl winner has admitted that he looked into the possibility of returning from retirement to the NFL, but that the league was “not particularly enthusiastic” about the idea.

Brady, who last played in the best football league in the world in 2022, is currently a minority owner of the Las Vegas Raiders and emphasized in an interview with ‘CNBC’ that he is “very happy to be retired”.

However, the former quarterback superstar also admitted to having asked the league about its rules regarding active players holding shares in a franchise at the same time.

“I actually asked, and they don’t particularly like that idea,” Brady said in an interview with the broadcaster, which has now published an excerpt from the interview: “So I’m going to leave it at that.”

And further: “We’ve tried a lot of things, and I’m really enjoying my retirement. I’d like to say that too.”

Tom Brady would have to sell Raiders shares for NFL comeback

Brady, who turns 49 in August, would have to sell his Raiders shares in accordance with league rules if he wanted to make a comeback as a player.

A league spokesman also told “CNBC” that there would be “salary cap issues” if an active player owned shares in a team.

A comeback by Brady would not be a novelty despite his age. On the one hand, he himself has already returned from retirement once, and on the other, other stars have also returned after long breaks in some cases.

It was only last season that playmaker Philip Rivers made his comeback with the Indianapolis Colts at the age of 44 after not playing for over four years.

Brady acquired five percent of the shares in 2024 together with two businessmen and currently has a “strategic advisory role”, according to his own statements. “I’m a minority shareholder. When you’re that, there’s not really a job description. I don’t really have a day-to-day role.”
