NFL – Todd Gurley doesn’t regret ending career: “Wouldn’t have satisfied me”

The NFL career of running back Todd Gurley is over. Although there would have been a tempting offer, the 29-year-old has no regrets

From 2017 to 2018, no one in the NFL found the end zone more often than running back Todd Gurley. In a span of two seasons, he scored a whopping 40 touchdowns – 19 in 2017 and another 21 in 2018 – despite missing three games this season. But despite his stellar performances, the following 2020 season was his last in the NFL.

On LeSean McCoy and DeSean Jackson’s “25/10 Show”, the former athlete, who turns 30 in a few weeks, spoke about his time in the best football league in the world. When the two hosts joked that Gurley could still make a comeback at his age, he made it clear that he is retired – and that it will stay that way.

“I remember when I signed my contract extension with the Rams, my agent broke down my situation,” the running back said.

“He said, ‘You get this, you get this amount of money, and then when they cut you, you’re 26 years old and you have a lot of money, and you’re young.’ And then the [Rams] contract guy was like, ‘Yeah, but we’re never going to let that happen.’ And that’s exactly how that shit played out,” Gurley continued.

In July 2018, the ball-carrier had agreed to a four-year, $60 million contract with the Rams, $45 million of which was guaranteed, which was the highest guaranteed amount for a player of his position in the NFL to that point. He was finally released by the franchise in March 2020.

After one more season, which Gurley spent with the Falcons, the NFL was over. “I’m living in L.A. I’m chilling. I’ve done it all. Of course I’d like a ring. But I went to the Super Bowl and lost. I feel like I’ve done a lot of things I never thought I’d ever do,” the 29-year-old explained.

Gurley could have signed with Ravens

And further: “In the end, it didn’t matter whether I scored ten more touchdowns or none at all. It wasn’t going to satisfy me anymore, it really didn’t.”

Gurley added that he would have had the opportunity to sign with the Baltimore Ravens in 2021. But he didn’t because he was already at peace with his career.

“I grew up a Ravens fan. Then I thought about it and realized my career was really over,” explained the Baltimore native, the tenth pick of the 2015 draft: “It wasn’t up for discussion. I’m in L.A. now and I’m not going to Baltimore – hell no. I’m relaxing, chilling and have a good perspective.”

Gurley was drafted by the Rams and lost the Super Bowl of the 2018 season with the team against the New England Patriots with 3:13. The running back has 6,082 rushing yards and 67 rushing touchdowns in his career, plus he caught 243 passes for 2,254 yards and twelve touchdowns.
