NFL sticks to taunting rule and takes players to task: “Just turn away”

The NFL’s tauting rule continues to receive a lot of criticism – from players, fans and the media. However, the league is sticking to it and is additionally reminding professionals to behave correctly.

Munich – Hardly any rule is currently as hotly debated as “taunting” in the NFL.

Players are instructed not to cheer in the direction of the opponent and to behave respectfully towards all parties involved.

Fans and the media criticise the rule because it takes away the fun and memorable cheering scenes of the players. Individual scenes and questionable decisions by the referees are also repeatedly criticised.

However, the NFL is not impressed by this and is sticking to taunting. Walt Anderson, Senior Vice President and the person in charge of referee development at the NFL, has sent out a message to the players.

NFL message to players: “Erase any doubt “

“Avoid behaviour that can be interpreted in the direction of the opponent or the opposing bench. This applies to gestures, postures and any other form of verbal or physical disrespect,” the message reads.

“Just turn away and take the opportunity to celebrate with your teammates,” Anderson writes further. Players should avoid putting referees in a position where they have to make decisions about players’ behaviour. Even though these may not be as drastic as a physical foul, he said.

“Erase any doubt and don’t take the risk of provoking a penalty for you and your team,” Anderson elaborates.

According to “ESPN”, 35 flags have become for tauntings this season. 16 of them in the last three weeks alone. Most recently, Bears coach Matt Nagy also spoke out in favour of the rule.
