Once again, Marlon Werthmann, a German, has the chance to earn a spot in the NFL in 2023 via the “International Player Pathway Program”.
Munich – The NFL has announced the eleven players who can secure a place in the NFL in 2023 via the “International Player Pathway Program”. One of them, Marlon Werthmann, is once again a German.
NFL Germany boss Alexander Steinforth is particularly pleased about this: “The International Player Pathway Program is an important part of our efforts to promote the game worldwide and to pave the way for international athletes to enter the NFL. We’re excited to have Marlon representing Germany for 2023, and we look forward to seeing him compete for a future spot on an NFL squad.”
Werthmann, who grew up in Mannheim and started playing football at the age of twelve, has had opportunities to go to the US in previous years. However, offers from the colleges of Maine, Buffalo and Connecticut fell through due to the Corona pandemic. The offensive lineman therefore stayed in Germany and most recently played for the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns.
There are currently three “IPP” players on active NFL squads
Since its inception in 2017, a total of 26 players have made it onto NFL squads through the programme, including Jakob Johnson (Las Vegas Raiders), David Bada (Washington Commanders), Marcel Dabo (Indianapolis Colts) and Aaron Donkor (Seattle Seahawks). Currently, Johnson, Jordan Mailata (Australia/Philadelphia Eagles) and Efe Obada (UK/Washington Commanders) are three players on the active rosters.
