On the sidelines of the owners meeting in Minneapolis, Colts owner Jim Irsay reveals the term of the planned contract extension for NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. The 63-year-old also holds out the prospect of changes to the league’s governance structure.
Following reports of an imminent NFL contract extension with Commissioner Roger Goodell, Jim Irsay, owner of the Indianapolis Colts on the sidelines of the recent owners meeting in Minneapolis has revealed the planned term of the new working paper.
“I think we just have to sign off on it, but it’s pretty much set,” Irsay told reporters in Minneapolis.
Goodell likely to be NFL commissioner until March 2027
According to the report, Goodell is to remain at the helm of the league until March 2027. After that, it looks like it’s the end for the 64-year-old. The owners are already thinking about a future without him.
According to Irsay, the commissioner’s responsibilities could be split after Goodell’s term ends.
As reported by Yahoo Sports, Irsay said, “It could be that we have a CEO for business and the league and a commissioner for football.” The aim, he said, was to move into other areas of the entertainment industry, such as gaming or the production of films.
The leadership of the NFL in sporting and financial matters by a single person in a personal union might no longer be feasible in view of these plans.
Whatever Goodell’s successor looks like: One thing is certain: he leaves big shoes to fill.
Team sales break records
Since he took over in 2006, the league’s revenue and the value of its individual franchises have soared.
The approaching sale of the Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion will set a new record for the price of a sports club.
The previous record dates back only to June 2022, when the Denver Broncos changed hands for $4.65 billion.
