According to US media reports, the 25-year-old will receive a new five-year contract for the equivalent of 237.6 million euros (262.5 million US dollars). The Chargers confirmed a multi-year contract extension in a statement, but did not give any details.

With his deal, Herbert surpasses quarterbacks Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles/255 million US dollars) and Lamar Jackson (Baltimore Ravens/260 million US dollars), who also recently caused a stir with record contracts.

Herbert, selected by the Chargers in 2020 as the number six overall pick in the NFL draft, will thus remain with the Californians until 2029.
