Dwayne Haskins has died. This is confirmed by the Pittsburgh Steelers, with whom the quarterback was under contract. He was killed in a traffic accident in Florida.
As “ESPN” reporter Adam Schefter reports, the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback died Saturday morning. According to the report, he was fatally injured by a car – there is also talk of a dump truck – in South Florida. The 24-year-old had been practising there with other quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers, it says.
Schefter is referring to Haskins’ agent Cedric Saunders.
Meanwhile, a Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman said Haskins was killed in an accident on I-595, which runs through Fort Lauderdale. She said he had tried to cross the lanes despite oncoming traffic, but died at the scene.
The road had to be closed for several hours. It was unclear why Haskins had been there on foot, the spokeswoman told the Associated Press agency.
A road traffic homicide investigation was underway, she said.
Dwayne Haskins, a standout at Ohio State before becoming Washington’s first-round pick and playing in Pittsburgh, died this morning when he got hit by a car in South Florida, per his agent Cedric Saunders. Haskins would have turned 25 years old on May 3.

Tomlin shows herself “devastated “
The Steelers released a statement from head coach Mike Tomlin, saying he is “devastated and speechless.” “He became a part of our Steelers family quickly after arriving in Pittsburgh and has been one of the hardest workers, on the field and in our community,” the 50-year-old added.
He went on to call Hawkins a “great team member, and close friend to so many”. Tomlin’s heart was broken, he said, thinking especially of Haskins’ wife Kalabrya and the entire family.

The Washington Commanders, with whom Haskins was under contract from 2019 to 2020, also spoke out. Owners Dan and Tanya Snyder spoke of a “tragic loss.”
Haskins, they said, was a “young man with tremendous potential and an infectious personality.”

Haskins in NFL since 2019
Haskins joined the then-Redskins as a first-round pick in 2019 but failed to establish himself as a starter. In 16 games, he threw 12 touchdowns to 14 interceptions, also ran for a score. He even attracted negative attention because of violations of the Corona rules.
In 2021, Haskins made another attempt with the Steelers, but remained without an appearance for the entire season. After the career end of Ben Roethlisberger, he made hopes for a new chance.
