The NFL world is mourning the loss of Jimmy Johnson. The former San Francisco 49ers cornerback was 86 years old. The cause of death is currently unknown.

“The 49ers mourn the loss of Jimmy Johnson. We send our deepest condolences to his friends and family,” San Francisco announced on the “X” platform.

Jimmy Johnson: Legendary NFL career

Johnson played his entire NFL career for the San Francisco 49ers. He was selected in the first round in 1961 and finished his career in 1976.

He quickly earned a reputation as an excellent man coverage player and collected a total of 47 interceptions. He made the Pro Bowl in five seasons.

Following his career, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame and the 49ers have not had his jersey number, 37, since 1977.
