NFL: Kirk Cousins finds new team and cashes in – future as mentor for a top talent?

Kirk Cousins has clarified his future and will remain in the NFL. As his advisor reveals, the quarterback is signing with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kirk Cousins is entering his 15th NFL season. As his advisor Mike McCartney announced on “X”, the quarterback has agreed a contract with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The team from the gambling metropolis will be the fourth NFL stop for Cousins, who celebrates his 38th birthday in August. He played for the former Washington Redskins from 2012 to 2017, then for six years for the Minnesota Vikings and most recently for the Atlanta Falcons.

Although Cousins has a contract with the Georgia franchise that runs until 2027 for a total of 180 million US dollars, the Falcons announced at the start of the league in March that they would be releasing him with effect from June 1. In Atlanta, he had recently had to line up behind Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa was also recently signed.

According to “ESPN” reporter Adam Schefter, he has now received a five-year contract worth 172 million US dollars, which only guarantees him one year and 20 million US dollars. The Raiders also have an option for two more years and 80 million US dollars.

Of the 20 million US dollars for the 2026 season, Atlanta will pay 8.7 million. Las Vegas will pay 1.3 million and the ten million guaranteed as a roster bonus on the third day of the 2027 season. Interesting fact: This season will be the eleventh in a row in which Cousins’ salary is fully guaranteed.

Cousins at Raiders as mentor for Mendoza?

The Raiders only have one quarterback under contract so far, Aidan O’Connell, after Geno Smith was traded to the New York Jets. With the franchise holding the first overall pick in the draft, the football world is assuming that Fernando Mendoza will also be in Las Vegas.

Cousins could then act as a mentor to the newly crowned college champion and Heisman Trophy winner. His initial reaction to the reports of his signing reads cryptic. On “X” he wrote only: “The fall wind…”

According to “Sports Illustrated,” the Los Angeles Rams, Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers also showed interest. Instead, however, the veteran decided to join a team from the AFC for the first time.

By signing with the Raiders, the Falcons will receive ten million US dollars in compensation payments, but will be left with 35 million US dollars in dead cap, which will be split between this season and the 2027 season. In 2026, Cousins will thus block 22.5 million US dollars from the Falcons, and another 12.5 million US dollars in 2027.
