The Kansas City Chiefs have extended the contract with Head Coach Andy Reid and other players. The Chiefs are not only setting the course for the future, but for the next NFL dynasty
It wasn’t so long ago that Andy Reid still had the reputation of being – to put it harshly – a failure.
His teams regularly performed well to outstandingly in the regular seasons. Only to fail at some point in the playoffs, be it in the Wild Card Round or the Super Bowl.
Until a quarterback named Patrick Mahomes came along.
Since Mahomes has been the starter, the Chiefs have reached four Super Bowls and won three of them. Of course, the quarterback is the most important figure on and off the field. But the head coach is a close second. He has to appoint his coordinators, work out the game plan, make sometimes unpopular decisions and – in Reid’s case at least – also call plays.
This is exactly what Reid does to perfection. What he often lacked, namely a star playmaker, he now has and he is winning one Lombardi Trophy after another. That’s why his contract, like that of general manager Brett Veach, has been extended until 2029. The Chiefs are thus taking the next steps towards becoming an NFL dynasty.
If they aren’t already.
Kansas City Chiefs: Relationship between Reid and players a perfect fit
In the ultimate team sport, American football, team chemistry is more important than in any other sport. 53 plus X men drenched in testosterone have to form a functioning team.
Reid achieves this like no other. The players follow and trust him, he trusts the players. The best example: In the Super Bowl, tight end Travis Kelce shouted angrily at his head coach for taking him off the field.
What was made an issue on social media during the game was not an issue at all for those involved after the game. And not for the head coach anyway. He remained undeterred and continued coaching undaunted.
Why? Because he has known Kelce for eleven years now and knows exactly whether this is a misstep by the superstar or a normal reaction from him.
Kansas City Chiefs: Mahomes/Reid duo virtually unbeatable
Reid has always been a good head coach. But with Patrick Mahomes at his side, he has become one of the best head coaches in league history. The Tom Brady/Bill Belichick duo already showed that a quarterback can more than help a head coach with his legacy.
Only three times since Mahomes has been the starter has the league managed to keep them from winning the Super Bowl. And Brady and his team have been responsible twice. He retired at the end of the 2022 season.
Since then, nothing has really stood in the way of the Reid/Mahomes duo’s continued success.
And this path leads to the next dynasty of this league
